What is a retrospective pool permit?
In Western Australia, a retrospective permit is called a Building Approval Certificate. It is approval for a pool or spa that was built without one. It is common when people buy a home with an older pool, or when a spa was installed without anyone realising a permit was needed.
Why it matters
- All pools and spas in WA over 30 cm deep must have a compliant barrier, and councils inspect them at least every four years
- Unapproved pools can cause problems when you sell your home
- Councils can issue fines and orders for unapproved or non-compliant pools
- Your home insurance may be affected if something goes wrong
How we fix it
- Site inspection and review of what was built
- Plans and engineering certification of the existing pool
- Certificate of Building Compliance from a private building surveyor
- Advice on any barrier upgrades needed (and who can do them)
- Lodging the Building Approval Certificate application with council
