FAQs

Common questions

Do I need a permit for a pool in WA?

Yes. Any pool or spa that can hold more than 300 mm (30 cm) of water needs a building permit from your local council and a compliant safety barrier.

Do above-ground pools need a permit?

Yes, if they can hold more than 30 cm of water. Above-ground pools must also have a compliant barrier. The pool walls can sometimes form part of the barrier if they are high enough and not climbable.

Do inflatable pools need a permit?

Small inflatable pools that hold less than 30 cm of water do not. Larger inflatable or portable pools that can hold more than 30 cm of water need a compliant barrier, just like a permanent pool.

How long does it take to get a pool permit?

Usually a few weeks once all documents are ready. Planning overlays, easements or heritage controls can add time.

What is a Certificate of Design Compliance?

It is a certificate from a registered private building surveyor confirming your pool plans meet the building rules. Lodging it with your permit application means council must decide within 10 business days.

Do I need development approval for a pool?

Most pools do not, but you may need it if your property is heritage listed, in a special control area, or the pool or decking does not meet the R-Codes. We check this for you.

What is a Building Approval Certificate?

It is how WA approves building work that was done without a permit, such as an older pool. It lets you make an unapproved pool legal.

How often do pool fences need to be inspected?

At least every four years. Your local council inspects the barrier and will contact you to arrange a time.

Can a pool be close to the boundary fence?

Often yes, but setbacks, easements and the barrier design all matter. Boundary fences used as part of the pool barrier must meet the pool fencing rules on the pool side.

Do you work with pool builders?

Yes. We handle permits for pool builders across Perth and WA so they can focus on construction.

What areas do you cover?

All of Western Australia, including Perth metro, Mandurah, Bunbury, Busselton, Geraldton, Albany and regional areas.
